Artifact Overview
Henry Leland, with his son Wilfred, founded Lincoln Motor Company in 1917 to build aircraft engines for the Allied Powers in World War I. After the war, they turned to production of luxury automobiles. The Lincoln car was well engineered and well built -- Leland hallmarks -- but it lacked the attractive styling expected from a premium marque. Ford purchased Lincoln in 1922.
