Looking North across St. Petersburg, Florida from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Its Opening Day, September 6, 1954

Summary

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge carried vehicles across Florida's Tampa Bay. The first cantilever span opened in 1954, and a second was added in 1971. That second span collapsed in 1980 after one of its supports was struck by a freighter. A completely new cable-stayed bridge opened at the site in 1987. Tolls fund the bridge's ongoing maintenance.
