Summary

From 1982 to 1991, the annual Detroit Grand Prix was contested on a challenging 2.5-mile circuit laid out on downtown Detroit streets. In 1992, the course moved to nearby Belle Isle. The race was a Formula One event before transitioning to the IndyCar Series in 1989. Italian driver Michele Alboreto took the checkered flag for Tyrrell Racing in 1983.
