Summary

Beginning in the 1830s, some people began to speak out against slavery. The Hutchinson Family, a popular troupe of traveling singers from New England, took up the antislavery cause in the 1840s. They gave electrifying performances at conventions and meetings, with songs of their own composition like "The Bereaved Slave Mother."
