Blue Amberol Cylinder Record, "Stars and Stripes Forever," 1913

Summary

Famed composer and bandleader John Phillip Sousa wrote this popular march celebrating the American flag. This version is played by Sousa's band -- though Sousa sent his music director to lead the band in his place. Sousa did not care for the quality of early acoustical recordings, which he referred to as "canned music." When electrical recording arrived in the 1920s, Sousa became a fan of the improved sound.
