British racing driver John Surtees won several motorcycle championships before moving to Formula One cars in 1960. He quickly established himself as one of the best, winning the F1 World Drivers' Championship in 1964. Surtees also made four appearances at the 24 Hours of Le Mans before retiring from competitive driving in 1972.
