Known as the Vagabonds, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and John Burroughs embarked on numerous camping trips between 1916 and 1924. While they all enjoyed the peace and quiet of the outdoors, some occasionally longed for finer amenities. During a 1918 trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains, Firestone visited one of his stores in Roanoke, Virginia, to ask about the local hotel accommodations.
