The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, or simply the Grange, was founded in 1867 to promote social, economic, and political ties among rural people. New members were initiated through a ritual utilizing agricultural iconography -- including a miniature ax, plow, harrow, spade, hoe, pruning knife, and sickle.
