Summary

The Southern Pacific Railroad traced its roots to the Central Pacific Railroad which, along with the Union Pacific, completed the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. By the late 20th century, SP operated more than 13,000 miles of track throughout the southwestern United States. SP merged with Union Pacific in 1996.
