Monorail and Space Needle in Downtown Seattle, Washington, circa 1962

Summary

For the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, planners wanted a futuristic icon that fit the forward-looking theme of "Century 21." They ended up with two icons: the Space Needle, with its panoramic view from a revolving restaurant, and a monorail, which brought people to the fair from downtown. This monorail continues to serve the city as a public transit system.
