Collecting Mobility: New Objects, New Stories
Exhibit at Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation®
- October 23, 2021 – January 2, 2022
- Time: 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
What makes an object museum-worthy? Collecting Mobility: New Objects, New Stories takes you behind the scenes at The Henry Ford to show you how we continue to grow our vast collection of more than 26 million artifacts, from everyday items to technological breakthroughs.
Through the lens of recent additions to our mobility collections, this limited-engagement exhibition takes you through the process of adding new objects to The Henry Ford’s collections as we pose the question, “What belongs in a museum?” From collecting the everyday to looking ahead to what museums should be collecting for the future, guests will walk away with a better understanding of how and why museums collect what they do and the stories their collections share.
Your Experience Includes:
- More than 30 rarely seen artifacts from our mobility collections, ranging from the late 1800s to the 2010s in a 7,400-square-foot gallery space.
- Behind-the-scenes access to the museum curation process, including how and why we justify what we collect.
- Museum insider knowledge: Learn how we number and catalog new items, collect objects for programs and exhibits, and more.
