The Jackson Home from Selma, Alabama, opens in Greenfield Village in June 2026, becoming the first home to be added to the collection of historic structures in more than 40 years. The home comes to The Henry Ford with the inspiring story of a courageous family and community at the forefront of one of the most crucial moments of the Civil Rights Movement in America. Their tireless efforts, spotlighted on national and world stages, would eventually lead to the signing of the Voting Rights Act on August 6, 1965.

Originally built in 1919, the Jackson Home housed three generations of African American dentists and their families. Over the course of 100 years, each family put their own mark on the home, and many changes and renovations were made over the decades.

As The Henry Ford explored the scope of relocating the home to Greenfield Village, the period of significance was narrowed to 1965 ─ a landmark year in the fight for civil and voting rights that included the Selma to Montgomery marches, President Lyndon Johnson's iconic "We Shall Overcome" speech, the signing of the Voting Rights Act and other pivotal moments of activism.

In this temporary collection spotlight, explore the Jackson Home's final journey to Greenfield Village ─ a journey of discovery for The Henry Ford as we peel back layers to restore the home to its 1965 appearance.

"The Road to 1965: A Journey of Discovery" is free for members or included with museum admission.
