Detroit Directory & Patent Cataloging and Access Internship

Simmons Graduate Internship Program

The Benson Ford Research Center holds among its collection a run of City of Detroit Directories and Ford Motor Company Patents. Both runs, while different in subject, are valuable additions to the collection and hold high research value.  We request an intern to complete catalog records for both runs. The completion of this internship will allow Library staff to better utilize the directories and patents for researchers and special access and assist with the continued stewardship of the collection.


Working with library staff, the interns duties will include:

  • Rare Book Handling
  • Original and Copy Cataloging
  • Reshelving/Rehousing items as needed

In addition, at the completion of the internship, with assistance and input from appropriate staff, the student will present a synopsis of the project to an audience of The Henry Ford staff.


Skills and abilities required:

In addition to being currently enrolled in a graduate-level program with an archival or library focus, the student should have:

  • Understanding of MARC and RDA
  • Additional desirable credentials:
  • Experience with OCLC
  • Knowledge of Alma, Primo, or other Ex Libris products
  • Rare Book Handling Experience
  • Research Skills

Successful completion of the internship will give the student experience with:

  • Library and Collection Management Systems Alma, Emu)
  • Marc Records
  • Rare Book Handling
  • Working relationship with a Special Collections library team
