Roadside Collections Processing Project Internship

Simmons Graduate Internship Program

The Archives and Library at The Henry Ford has recently expanded its holdings of collections related to American roadside architecture, business and culture, including what can be considered the premier collection of diner materials in the country, put together by the leading expert on the subject.

  • Richard J.S. Gutman Diner Collection, 2019.72
  • John Margolies Ephemera and Photographs Collection, 2018.103
  • John Margolies Roadside America Collection, 2013.151

The Archives and Library seeks a Simmons Intern to assist in the effort to complete processing of these three collections to improve their serviceability and findability for our internal and external researchers.

Working with the Archives Technical Services Team, duties of the intern will include:

  • Arrangement and description of unprocessed materials
  • Rehousing of materials to archival grade containers
  • Addition and improvement of container labeling
  • Updating and revision of existing collection description

In addition, at the completion of the internship, with assistance and input from appropriate staff, the student will present a synopsis of the project to an audience of The Henry Ford staff.

In addition to being currently enrolled in a graduate-level program with an archival or library focus, the student should have:

  • Interest in gaining experience with description and access of archival collections
  • Understanding of archival description standards and practices
  • Strong writing and communication skills, and attention to detail.

Additional desirable credentials:

  • Requirements for the description of, and provision of access to, archival collections
  • Experience with a non-archives focused collection management system
  • Adapting and applying best practices to a working archive
  • Working in the multi-disciplinary environment of a museum archive
