Bicyclist with Columbia Bicycle, circa 1892

Summary

Low-mount bicycles with chain drives and pneumatic tires displaced the lofty, high-wheel cycles in the 1890s. This photograph shows a man posing with his Columbia bicycle about 1892. The average man and woman could now ride in comfort and safety -- not trying to mount a 50-inch wheel or taking a fall from the precarious heights of the high wheeler.
