Since the 1850s, Coney Island had been a popular summer haven for New Yorkers. Brighton Beach, named after the fashionable English seaside resort, was located at the eastern end of Coney Island. By the 1870s, middle-class Brooklynites could hop on the Brooklyn, Flatbush, and Coney Island Railway and take advantage of this beach's saltwater bathing and gracious accommodations.
