The thirty-third running of the Indianapolis 500 was held on May 30, 1949. Pennsylvania-born Bill Holland took the checkered flag in the Blue Crown Spark Plug Special. It was an especially sweet victory for Holland, who had finished second in the previous two Indy 500 races. Holland would take second place again in 1950.

The cover unfolded to reveal three-time winners Dario Franchitti, Bobby Unser, Helio Castroneves, and Johnny Rutherford. Franchitti and Castroneves both hoped to join the four-time winners club in 2013, but the victory went to Tony Kanaan. Castroneves earned a fourth win in 2021.
